Sparrow Hospital has again earned the highest level of trauma center certification and remains mid-Michigan region's only Verified Level 1 Trauma Center for adult and pediatric Patients.

To fill this role for our community, Sparrow has trauma surgeons and multidisciplinary trauma team members prepared 24/7 to care for the most severely injured Patients and provide the best chance for survival and recovery.

"We are proud to have been successfully reverified as a Level I Trauma Center," said Timothy Hodge, D.O., Sparrow Executive Medical Director of Emergency Services and a member of the Sparrow Board of Directors. "Our Caregivers are dedicated to providing this lifesaving care to the people in our community who need it most."

This achievement recognizes the trauma center's dedication to providing optimal care for injured Patients. Sparrow's trauma team includes trauma surgeons, specially trained registered nurses experienced in emergency care, and skilled emergency technicians.

"We are very pleased that Sparrow meets these strict guidelines to provide high quality adult and pediatric trauma care," said John Kepros, M.D., Medical Director of Trauma Services at Sparrow.

The verification comes from the Verification Review Committee (VRC), an ad hoc committee of the Committee on Trauma (COT) of the American College of Surgeons (ACS).

Established by the American College of Surgeons in 1987, the COT's Consultation Verification Program for Hospitals promotes the development of trauma centers in which participants provide not only the hospital resources necessary for trauma care, but also the entire spectrum of care to address the needs of all injured Patients. This spectrum encompasses the pre-hospital phase through the rehabilitation process.

The American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational association of surgeons that was founded in 1913 to raise the standards of surgical education and practice and to improve the care of the surgical Patient. The College has over 72,000 members and it is the largest association of surgeons in the world. Longstanding achievements have placed the ACS in the forefront of American surgery and have made it an important advocate for all surgical Patients.
