CARSON CITY, Mich.- There was a celebration this morning at University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Carson as staff and community members gathered to recognize the hospital’s designation as a top performer in a major national study.
The hospital has been named a top performer in the small community hospital category of the 2025 Vizient Quality and Accountability Study. The annual ranking places the Carson City facility among the nation’s elite for delivering high-quality, patient-centered care.
“We are thrilled to accept this recognition that reflects the dedication and hard work of our Carson team members,” said Linda Reetz, Market President for community hospitals at UM Health-Sparrow. “This award demonstrates our excellence in delivering the highest quality of care with a focus on safety, effectiveness, efficiency and patient-centered care. Quality care close to home. Around the corner and in your corner.”
The Vizient study analyzes performance across six key areas: safety, mortality, effectiveness, efficiency, patient-centeredness and equity. It draws data from 1,220 participating hospitals, including information from the Vizient Clinical Data Base, patient satisfaction surveys from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems, and safety metrics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The data period covered July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025.
For patients like Nicholle Hereth, the recognition reflects the care she experiences firsthand. Hereth is being treated at UM Health-Sparrow Carson for cholangiocarcinoma, a cancer that forms in the bile ducts.
“They have done everything that I can imagine,” said Hereth, a patient at UM Health-Sparrow Carson. “These doctors go above and beyond for me to look for extra help for me.”
Hereth said the hospital’s staff provides support that extends beyond medical treatment.
“I don’t think there are enough words. Like, ‘thank you’ doesn’t even begin to cooperate,” Hereth said. “They make me feel at home when I’m here.”
In a separate honor, C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital at University of Michigan Health-Sparrow was recognized as a top performer for the Vizient Sustainability Excellence Award, which honors health care organizations demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainability.
Officials say the recognition affirms the hospital’s role in providing exceptional care to the rural communities of Mid-Michigan.
