Sue Torgerson of Lansing named December Volunteer of the Month

Published: Dec. 18, 2014

The Sparrow Women’s Board of Managers and Sparrow Volunteer Services department have named Sue Torgerson of Lansing as the December Volunteer of the Month.

Torgerson came to Sparrow to volunteer after observing the extraordinary care given to her father at Sparrow Specialty Hospital and Sparrow Hospice Services.

Torgerson has volunteered at the St. Lawrence Information and Escort Desk for nearly seven years, greeting Patients as they come in for surgery or family coming to see Patients. She is touted as highly reliable, dedicated, and one of the few who like to take the early morning shifts. She has also volunteered at Ele’s Place.

Torgerson came to Lansing to work in the office at the Oldsmobile plant. She met her husband’s father there and he introduced her to his son, Richard. They will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in 2015. She placed her career on hold to raise her family and then went back to work, at a Physician’s office, in 1986.

Torgerson and her husband have two children, Rex and Tammy, and one granddaughter, Jade. She loves to read, go for walks with her husband and, since her family lives nearby, spend time with them bowling and going to drag races.

Volunteering is very rewarding for Torgerson. She enjoys greeting Patients and families, helping ease their anxiety, and helping the surgical lounge staff and volunteers.

She is a great example of Sparrow’s volunteers making a difference to Patients and families.
