Sparrow welcomed a group of students from the MSU College Assistant Migrant Program (CAMP) on Tuesday, Feb. 2. The seven-week educational program offers individuals with migrant or seasonal farm work backgrounds a unique opportunity to begin an undergraduate program at Michigan State University. The goal is to provide a health care career exploration internship experience that will excite and encourage these freshman students to continue their educational journey in the health care field.
Over the next seven weeks, the CAMP students will spend four hours a week in a different area of the hospital, learning about a career in health care. Students will be given options to select from a list of participating areas and roles. Caregivers volunteer to spend four hours with a student on the weeks their service area is selected.
The program kicked off on Tuesday, Feb. 2 with a welcome from Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer Mary Lou Wesley, followed by presentations to prepare them for their health care experience, and culminating in a tour of the hospital led by Nursing Performance Specialist Deborah Lopez, BS, RN, who will serve as the CAMP Student Liaison.
“I am certain this is going to be a successful and rewarding experience for everyone involved,” said Lopez.
