Sparrow Hospital Guild: 90 Years of Guilded Giving

Published: Nov. 10, 2014

The Sparrow Hospital Guild is celebrating their 90th Anniversary, demonstrating an amazing commitment to support health care for our community through the Sparrow Health System.

This volunteer group, a part of the Women’s Hospital Association, continues the heritage of 50 women who first gathered to help the newly established clinic in 1924 by sewing dressings and raising money to pay the hospital fee of $5 per tonsillectomy!

Today’s Sparrow Guild of dedicated women continues to raise and disburse funds for special projects throughout Sparrow Hospital.

Each year their primary fund raising event is the annual Charity Ball, a Lansing staple, which will be held on Nov. 15 at the Lansing Country Club. The event is black-tie optional, and will feature the music of Persuasion, one of Detroit’s most sought-after bands. To reserve your place, please contact Shela Dubenion-Smith by email at shela.dubenion-smith@sparrow.org or by calling 517.364.5680.

Over the years the Sparrow Guild has raised and donated more than $1.2 million for Sparrow and its special projects such as the startup as a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital, the outdoor patio for inpatient Oncology Patients, the rooftop atrium at Hospice House, robes for Radiation Oncology Patients, and the new diagnostic waiting area in the Sparrow Professional Building providing Patients awaiting mammography, breast ultrasound, stereotactic breast biopsy, general x-ray, the infusion center, and laboratory services a state of the art, positive and professional experience.

This year, funds will be dispersed to hospital units to directly benefit Patient care. Those who wish to contribute to the Guilded Gifts Forever Endowment may do so at www.sparrowfoundation.org/Guild.
