LANSING, Mich. – University of Michigan Health-Sparrow celebrated the opening of its new Comprehensive Breast Center, a state-of-the-art facility designed to provide patients with high-quality, compassionate breast care close to home.
The 9,000-square-foot center, located on the first floor of the UM Health-Sparrow Professional Building at 1215 E. Michigan Ave., unites a full spectrum of breast health services in one accessible location. The center aims to improve the patient experience by eliminating the need to travel to multiple locations for screening, diagnostics and treatment coordination.
“Specialized community-based care is essential in the fight against breast cancer and that’s one reason we’re so proud to unveil the University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Comprehensive Breast Center,” said Margaret Dimond, regional president of University of Michigan Health.
The facility features innovative technology, including four mammography machines with 3D technology (tomosynthesis) for patients with dense breast tissue, four additional ultrasound stations and a new stereotactic biopsy station. This technology allows for greater precision in detecting and diagnosing breast abnormalities.

A key feature of the center is its focus on patient comfort and convenience. The design includes private changing rooms and separate waiting areas for patients in gowns to ensure privacy. The care team is largely women-led, creating a specialized and empathetic environment. The center is made possible with the philanthropic generosity from Women Working Wonders (W3).
Breast nurse navigators are central to the patient-centered model, guiding individuals through their care journey by coordinating appointments, explaining treatments and connecting them to resources.
“No more traveling across multiple sites. No more waiting weeks between appointments. This center streamlines the care journey, reducing the time between screening, diagnosis, and treatment, and that is transformative,” said Brittani Thomas, M.D., medical oncologist at the Herbert-Herman Cancer Center. “This facility also expands our capacity to serve the region, offering local access to mammograms, diagnostic evaluations, ultrasounds, biopsies, and treatment all in one place.”
The opening of the center comes at a critical time for breast health. Nationwide, the COVID-19 pandemic caused delays in breast screenings, leading to a decrease in early-stage cancer diagnoses. The expanded capacity and cutting-edge technology at the new center will help reverse this trend by increasing access to early detection, which is linked to less invasive treatments and higher survival rates.
The center is now open and scheduling appointments. Services include screening and diagnostic mammograms, ultrasound, biopsy services, and treatment planning.
