Navigating Michigan Avenue construction

Published: July 1, 2025

LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Avenue road construction project is creeping closer to the University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Lansing campus, and that will impact our team members, patients and visitors, especially those coming from the east (such as East Lansing, Okemos and the Williamston areas).

The good news is the inconvenience won’t be too bad for awhile because the project is only extending to a section of Michigan Avenue at the east end of the hospital. Starting the week of July 7, the project is expected to extend from Lathrop Street west to the traffic light at Holmes and Michigan Avenue.

The bad news: Starting in August, the project is expected to move toward the front of the hospital, where it will continue into the fall. With a little planning, however, you can limit the frustration and inconvenience.

What you can do:

Use a navigation app like Google Maps or Apple Maps to direct you to the route experiencing the least amount of traffic disruptions.

Or here are some alternatives for those coming from the east (download map):

  • Route 1 for those going to the Herbert-Herman Cancer Center, Plaza, Sparrow Professional Building, Medical Arts or 1400 building: Take Kalamazoo Street west to Pennsylvania; head north on Pennsylvania and turn right at Eureka. You can access Ramps B and C off Eureka or drive through the Ronald McDonald House lot to get to Med Arts.
  • Route 2 for those going to the Herbert-Herman Cancer Center, Plaza, Sparrow Professional Building and Medical Arts or 1400 building: Take Oakland west to Pennsylvania, head south on Pennsylvania and turn left on Eureka.
  • Route 1 for those going to the hospital: Take Kalamazoo west to Pennsylvania, head north on Pennsylvania and turn right at Jerome to enter Ramp A. Alternatively, you can turn right at Michigan and make a left into the parking entrance.
  • Route 2 for those going to the hospital: Take Oakland west to Pennsylvania, head south on Pennsylvania and turn left at either Jerome or Michigan.

We apologize for any inconvenience.
