A piece of Ionia history is slated for demolition.
Plans are in place this month to tear down the former Sparrow Ionia Hospital located at 550 E. Washington Street. With abatement and asbestos removal complete, construction crews will secure the perimeter of the building with a fence for safety and security during demolition. All streets and parking around the adjacent Sparrow Medical Group Ionia office will remain open. Demolition and site restoration is anticipated to wrap up by the end of May.
Opened in 1953, the former hospital served the Ionia area for many years. The building has been vacant since June 2015 when the new Sparrow Ionia Hospital opened on South State Road, approximately four miles south. Remaining equipment and furnishings from the old facility have been auctioned off or given to charities.
Sparrow Medical Group Ionia and Sparrow Home Care will remain at their current sites. The two-acre former hospital property will be converted to green space.
