Greenville family practice physician honored for compassionate care
A University of Michigan Health-West family practice physician is being recognized for going to great lengths to care for a vulnerable patient.
Alexander Witte, M.D., who joined University of Michigan Health in September 2023 at the Greenville Health Center-Primary Care, has been named the February Team Member Spotlight award recipient.
Witte earned the honor after taking personal charge of care for a young adult patient with a difficult, non-healing wound. The patient was having issues with their home health services and was unable to sit up for six to eight weeks following extensive surgery and hospitalization.
Instead of letting the patient struggle alone, Witte coordinated directly with them, contacted the plastic surgery team at U-M Ann Arbor and worked with his local staff to ensure every detail of the patient’s recovery was covered.
He went a step further by organizing special clinic days with his medical assistant. They arranged for the patient to arrive by ambulance and use a specific stretcher, accommodations that required significant time and communication to coordinate.
“Always been interested in meeting people where they are,” Witte said. “Also, advocating for their kind of preventative stuff and trying to keep them healthy and from getting sick, not just fixing it after it’s broken.”
His actions ensured a vulnerable patient received the support needed during a difficult time, exemplifying the dedication and compassion the monthly award seeks to highlight.
The Team Member Spotlight award recognizes team members who exemplify the health system’s core values of compassion, dedication and professionalism in service to patients and colleagues.
