Compassionate Care Services

Caring professionals committed to you

What sets Herbert-Herman Cancer Center apart from other cancer programs? Compassion.

Every member of our team is a caring professional truly committed to treating each patient’s unique situation. Our physicians, advanced practitioners, nurses, therapists, social workers, dietitians, genetic counselors, and researchers don’t just treat cancer tumors and malignancies. They take the extra time to attend to every aspect of patient care and recovery.

We match volunteers, who are also cancer survivors, with our current patients. Being able to talk with other individuals who have endured similar health experiences helps patients feel more confident and comfortable during their cancer treatment process.

We have nurse navigators on staff that serve as educators and facilitators for patients and their families in our multidisciplinary clinics (chest, breast, colorectal, upper gastrointestinal, genitourinary, head & neck). We also have care coordinators who will:

  • Assist patients in optimizing their insurance and minimizing out-of-pocket expenses
  • Advocate for patients with insurance providers
  • Coordinate supportive care services
  • Arrange for discharge planning

Rather than making separate appointments with specialists from different practices, our patients see a team of clinicians under one roof and in one visit. Our clinicians, specialists who are highly regarded in their fields, sit down together to determine the most effective treatment plan. The patient leaves that day knowing how they will proceed in their fight against cancer.

Our multidisciplinary clinics reduce the time frame between diagnosis and treatment, and ensure that our patients are equipped with the best treatment plan possible.

Our comprehensive, compassionate services include:

Cancer Prevention and Screening

UM Health-Sparrow promotes and conducts annual cancer screenings for the community utilizing American Cancer Society guidelines. Information on cancer prevention and screening is shared at numerous health fairs, demonstrations, and events.

Smoking Cessation

The Herbert-Herman Cancer Center supports smoking cessation classes for the community. These efforts aim to eliminate the number one preventable cause of cancer.

Early Detection

When cancer is detected early, there’s a greater chance for successful treatment and cancer survival. That is why a fast, accurate diagnosis is imperative. At UM Health-Sparrow, we are committed to early detection, and we rely on leading-edge diagnostic tools not available in all hospitals. Using this technology, we’re able to diagnose patients with a level of detail never before possible. For example, our CT scanners offer the most advanced cancer imaging on the market today – a spectacular three-dimensional view inside the internal tissues and organs of our patients.

The primary goals of palliative care are to relieve distressing symptoms, ensure the patient is comfortable, and support patients and families with medical decision-making. This includes physical, psychological, and spiritual support.
